Paul R. Halmos (1916-2006) was a major figure in twentieth century mathematics known for his work in operator theory, ergodic theory, and functional analysis, as well as for mathematical exposition and teaching. He was also an avid amateur photographer and routinely documented the people in his life, including some of the world's most notable mathematicians.
Halmos took over 10,000 photographs during his life. The photos were donated to the Archives of American Mathematics , a unit of the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin.
